The first Cornish Riviera Run took place starting from the Plymouth Hoe and it was the Pirelli Classic that inspired, Ted Lawrence, to create this event which has run each year, using the Great Western Railway's "Cornish Riviera " train which called at Plymouth on its way to Penzance.

Various controls "en route" used civic stamps to mark the entrants route card and to be finally stamped on the sea front at Penzance.Subsequent events have varied on the route and finishing points.

1996 Nuffield Gold Cup awarded
1997 The first Atlantic Coast Express Run took place starting from Sourton Cross, near Okehampton. Again this event had a railway theme, and toured along the north-west coast of Devon and Cornwall to finish at Padstow.

Subsequent runs have started from the old railway station at Okehampton and the routes have varied where ever the old Southern Railway served in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset, delivering its passengers directly to their seaside destination along what is now known as the "withered arm", without any passenger having to change trains along the route starting from Waterloo in London.(This event has run each year except for 2001 when it was cancelled due to Foot and Mouth.)
